History

In the 6th Century, it was seen as the lead up to the coming of Christ.
Throughout History, Advent has meant different things but it has basically always been a time of expectation or waiting for the arrival for a new season and a new saviour.
Advent Now
In the modern day, the meaning of Advent has faded. Because of the materialism of Christmas, Advent to the average person is just waiting for Christmas and Presents.
Christians and people of other beliefs though, all see Advent as a lead up to something. Advent for Christians now represents Christians waiting for Jesus to come back.
